When it opened in December 2013 it was welcomed as a gallery in an art-rich community, and two steps through the door demonstrates how well it has succeeded — paintings, photography, work in other media, enclose the space in the art of White Pine county.
And as a popular attraction to the traveling public — in itself a positive addition to the downtown — it has also become a de facto extension of the Visitor Center at the Chamber of Commerce.
The Art Bank has created a new gallery in the Garnet Mercantile store next door to house the famous Nevada art collection of Wally Cuchine, the retired impresario of the Eureka Opera House.
Cuchine is legendary for his art acquisitions from Nevada artists over the years — decades, rather — enough to cover the walls of his residence, and also of the gutted single-wide next door which is his personal gallery.
Only a small percentage of the more than 2,000 pieces in the Cuchine Collection are currently on display, but as it becomes publicly accessible in its own space, the Cuchine Collction is becoming a priceless ornament in Ely’s reputation.
